Victor Somma: “Minimal Dreams”

  • Palazzo 190 Rue Théodore Verhaegen Saint-Gilles, Bruxelles, 1060 Belgium (map)

We are so honored to start a new year full of DAS HAUS coziness and musical treats! We’re kicking off the new year on January 20th and hope to raise a glass with you and our musical guest of the evening; Brazilian composer and flutist Victor Somma.

Victor’s performance Minimal Dreams is an attempt to capture his own dream world into music. His rich imagination and fantastical narratives are translated into a series of pieces for four different types of flutes controlled by a looping station. Countless melodic layers are superimposed to create a composition which is half written, half improvised, but fully captivating. Heavily inspired by the ancestral sounds of Afro-Amerindian flutes, these compositions convey a very special atmosphere in which you’re truly encouraged to cross the barriers of the subconscious.

Flutist and composer from São Paulo based in Belgium since 2012, Victor Somma's musical style encompasses aspects of a solid classical training, as well as the sounds of indigenous, folk and ritual music from his home country. His works have been performed in Belgium, USA, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland and France by musicians such as Ivan Meylemans and the Leuven Symphony Orchestra (Belgium), Ashot Khachaturian, Alexandre Debrus, Sevak Avanesyan and Berten D' Hollander.

Since 2011, his interest has turned to musical practice as a tool for social inclusion. This led him to create his Musical Creation Workshop, which he developed at the invitation of pianist Maria João Pires with the support of Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Belgium, and which was implemented in different orphanages, psychiatric establishments and Belgian prisons between 2012 and 2020.

Minimal Dreams was recorded as an album and released in 2023.

December 20th promises to be a kaleidoscope of colors and dynamics - a New Year’s Party the way only DAS HAUS can throw one. We’ll see you there!
